.The Offline Favorite Wizard, discussed next, will start automatically.The Offline Favorite WizardThe first page of the Offline Favorite Wizard (after the optional Introductory page), shown in Figure 7-5,enables you to choose how much content you want downloaded while you re away.If you choose Yes,you can choose how many links  deep you want the download to go.If you set that value to 1, forinstance, the page that the favorite refers to and all the pages that are accessible via hyperlinks fromthat page will be downloaded.If you set that value to 2, pages that are available from hyperlinks on thefirst level of pages will also be downloaded, and so forth.Click the Next button after you have madeyour selection.page 113 Windows XP BibleFigure 7-5: First page of the Offline Favorite WizardThe second page of the wizard enables you to choose between manual updating of all offline pages,and downloading while you re away.Choose the second option, I would like to create a new schedule toschedule the downloads for off-hours.Click the Next button to display the third page of the wizard,shown in Figure 7-6.Here you can determine how often you want pages downloaded.The defaultsetting, 1, downloads pages daily.Figure 7-6: Third page of the Offline Favorite WizardYou also can select a time for the download to occur.For example, I set mine to 4 a.m.in this example,because I m (hopefully) not in the office at that time.You also can name the schedule and opt to haveyour computer connect to the Internet if it isn t already connected.(This is required if you have a dial-upconnection as opposed to a full-time connection such as cable or DSL.) Click the Next button to revealthe page shown in Figure 7-7.Figure 7-7: Fourth page of the Offline Favorite WizardIn most cases, you can choose No, because few Web sites require a user name and password to logon.In the event that the favorite you re working with now does require you to log on, choose the Yesoption and enter whatever user name and password you normally enter to gain access to the site.Clickthe Finish button, and you re done.Allowing for the automatic downloadKeep in mind one important point regarding these automatic downloads.Your computer needs to be on when the scheduled time arrives.Likewise, if you access the Internet through an external modem,page 114 Windows XP Biblethe modem needs to be turned on as well.You can turn off the monitor, however, because it is notneeded for automatic downloads.Tip Some network cards support a Wake On LAN capability, which automaticallywakes up a hibernating computer when the request to access the Internet arises.See your computer documentation to see whether it has this capability.Browsing offlineWhenever you want to view the downloaded pages on your PC, open Internet Explorer in the usualmanner.Then choose File Work Offline from the menu bar.Doing so prevents Internet Explorer fromattempting to download the offline favorite from the Internet.Then open your Favorites bar and click anyfavorite that you ve designated as an offline favorite.Internet Explorer shows you the copy of the pagethat has already been downloaded, so there s no need to wait.While working offline, you won t have access to pages that require you to be online.If you click a linkthat requires that you to be connected to the Internet, the dialog box shown in Figure 7-8 appears.Youcan either choose Stay Offline to continue browsing your offline favorites or you can click the Connectbutton to go online and browse the page normally.Figure 7-8: This dialog box appears when you attempt to access a Web page that hasn t been downloadedas an offline favorite.Updating pages manuallyIf you ever want to update all your offline favorites on the spur of the moment, get online and chooseTools Synchronize from the Internet Explorer menu bar.Then click Offline Web Pages at the top ofthe list of pages and click the Synchronize button.You must wait for the downloads, of course.After thedownload has completed, the pages in your Internet cache will indeed be in sync with the latest pageson those favorite Web sites.Managing download schedulesYou can change how often or at what time Windows downloads your offline favorites.In InternetExplorer, choose Tools Synchronize.Then click Offline Web Pages and click the Setup button.TheSynchronization Settings dialog box shown in Figure 7-9 opens.The three tabs across the top of thedialog box provide many different ways to control how and when offline favorites are synchronized, asfollows:Logon/LogOff: Enables you to synchronize selected items automatically when you log onor log off of the computerOn Idle: Enables you to synchronize selected items while the computer is idle but stillconnected to the InternetScheduled: Enables you to create your own schedules for synchronizing offline favoritespage 115 Windows XP BibleFigure 7-9: The Synchronization Settings dialog box for offline favoritesOn the Scheduled tab, you can click the Add button to create a schedule based on time.For example,you could create a schedule that updates offline favorites every day at 6 a.m.Note that regardless ofthe type of schedule you create, you will always see a list of offline favorites with check boxes next tothem [ Pobierz całość w formacie PDF ]
