Goback! So I turned back and regained consciousness in the hospital.Atthat very moment, I heard a nurse calling my name.A few days after her NDE, another strange event happened to Mrs O.Shewas still in pain, recovering at home. She said she looked at a picture of aplum tree in full blossom on the wall of her room (this is a rather commonimage in Japanese houses).Suddenly, she saw the face of her mother star-ing at her from the centre of a beautiful plum flower. This vision continuedfor about two weeks. She said: When I fully recovered, the face of my motherdisappeared from the plum tree. She felt that her mother had sent herback to our world because she still had several missions to accomplish inthis life. The first mission was that she had to become a Tai Chi Masterfor the good of other people. And so she did.She was still practicing thisdiscipline when I met her.The second reason was that she had to care for and learn more from hermother-in-law.In fact, four years after her NDE, her husband sadly passedaway and her mother-in-law was left all alone because her husband was heronly child. Her mother-in-law lived a healthy life and lived until the age of 103.During the interview, Mrs O.remembered several times when this old womanhad been important in her life. She said:I was very pleased to take care of her and I learnt so much from her.Inever had the opportunity to take care of my own mother while she wasalive. When she passed away I was a student in Tokyo, far away fromNiigata where my family lived.9780415455206_4_003.qxd 6/6/08 4:44 PM Page 61The river of no return 61Her NDE changed her life in various ways. She became less worried aboutevents in her life. She also understood that we all have a mission in life:My mother helped me to see my own path more clearly.I now recog-nize the power of parents love for their children. Finally, I had the chanceto take care of my mother-in-law and to learn much from her.I feel blessedfor what I have experienced.NDE are very rare and precious experi-ences.Only a few people have had these magnificent experiences.Case 2Mrs C.was 66 years old at the time of the interview. She studied Tai Chiand became a Grand Master (the highest level in the discipline). She had anNDE in October 1975 as a result of a long period of sickness. She was con-sidered clinically dead for an unknown period of time. She had a vision ofa river which separated her side from that of the spirit world.A rainbowbridge connected the two sides of the river.Once she regained consciousnessshe gave the following account:My father came to greet me.We walked together for a little while andthen he left me and crossed over a rainbow bridge.I was about to fol-low him but he told me not to do so.He said to me: Go home, go home! Then, I woke up.Case 3The third person interviewed was Mr C., a 41-year-old musician. He studiedclassical music and became a professional guitarist. He reported an NDE inDecember 1981 as a consequence of a terrible car accident. He said:My friend was driving a car and I was sitting in the passenger seat.Thecar smashed into a bus and I got a hard blow on my head.I was takento a hospital. In hospital, I was aware of being examined but imme-diately afterwards I became unconscious and entered a state of sus-pended animation with dilated pupils for a day (24 hours).Doctors toldmy parents there was no guarantee of my survival.Mr C.had a vision of an empty and strange place. He said: No one wasthere. No living things were around me.I remember that I felt serene butlonely.I was amazed at how vast the space was! It was neither too brightnor too dark.It was just there was no living thing there. He wanderedaround and reached a wall of bright and magnificent Light in his path.He said:9780415455206_4_003.qxd 7/6/08 12:59 PM Page 6262 The river of no returnI saw something glittering in the distance and went to it.Next thing Iknew there was a bright huge wall standing in my way.It was made ofgolden light. There was something I had to go across between the walland me.I believe there was no river, no bridge or nothing specifically. The wall, which shone gold softly, was made of pure glory and I wassure that there existed whole in it.I moved towards it, being gra-vitated to it.I have a feeling that I saw many things in this something.Everything happened very quickly.I remember that I saw everythingI had experienced. In all the cases the experiences were very uniqueevents, but when they did occur they were the most important experi-ences in their lives and could be life-transforming
